Nach einem B.Sc. in Neurowissenschaften an der Universität zu Köln erwarb Leon seinen M.Sc. in Organismischer Biologie, Evolutionsbiologie und Paläobiologie in Bonn. Von 2015 bis 2018 fertigte Leon seine Doktorarbeit an der Universität Potsdam an, die sich auf molekulare Evolution fokussiert. Daraufhin setzte er seine Arbeit als Postdoc am Leibniz-Institut für Biodiversitätsforschung fort. Seit 2021 arbeitet Leon als Postdoc in Frankfurt und untersucht die genomische Evolution von Schildkröteninnovationen, den Ursprung ihrer genetischen Geschlechtsbestimmung und wie historischer Klimawandel Schildkrötenpopulationen beeinflusste. Im Jahr 2023 erhielt Leon eine Förderung der DFG, um die Evolution klimatischer Flexibilität und Populationszusammenbrüche von bedrohten Süßwasseraalen zu untersuchen.

Genomics rapidly became an indispensable tool in our modern world, driving advancements across various fronts. From monitoring the spread and viral evolution during the global covid pandemic to species conservation, plant and animal breeding, genetic risk factor identification and medical testing, its applications are vast and varied. Although genomics has such a remarkable scientific and societal value, broader discussions are often hindered by its complexity and rapid development. In this talk, I provide a succinct overview of genomics, introducing key concepts, methodologies, and common challenges. With this primer listeners gain a conceptual understanding that paves the way for diving deep into the equally complex and exciting field of genomics.
